A week in Grenoble (France) in and around Le Pacifique
Personal Mobility in Grenoble, Le PAcifique:
As part of the project Communicating Dance, each participant could choose a personal mobility out of the partners menu option.
I chose to go to Grenoble in France, at Le Pacifique, one of the Partners of the project, in order to understand the French dance field functioning and where I could stand there as I have the wish to share my work with the country I come from…
In that context, I got the opportunity and chance to meet with different actors of the French dance field in that area of the country. The director and members of CDC Le Pacifique, Directors of theaters such as Amphithéâtre and La Rampe, a member of the CCN de Grenoble, a choreographer in residency at Le Pacifique, a member of the collective Cité Danse, a member of the Observatoire Politique Culturel…
I got overflown with information, witnessing again the amount of actors and mediums in place and more than ever it made me realize that dance is about encounters: encounters with an audience, with a maker, with performers, with supporters, with facilitators, with ideas, with a process, with a result.
And so, all this brought me to a question:
WHO MAKES THE DANCE?
Is it the AUDIENCE? The PROGRAMMERS? The DIRECTORS OF PLATFORMS OR NETWORKS? The DIRECTORS OF CENTERS OF RESEARCH AND PRODUCTION? CRITICS? SUBSIDIES DEALERS? POLITICS? The PERFORMERS?
Or is it the CHOREOGRAPHERS?
WE ALL DO!
We are all interconnected and interdependent because we need each other to exist. We’re all in the same dance, creating dance, marketing dance, reporting on dance… making dance happen in one way or another.
I reckon it is in the end a matter of finding the right matches, out of the same interests and beliefs, working together towards shared goals. So it is definitely about maintaining an open level of communication without drowning in our separate parts of the field. Let it come down to that without getting lost in the medium because in the end we all want the dance to be a good one, for everyone involved… Let’s not forget why we initially all decided to put a foot on that field, on that dance floor, in that theater, whatever each one’s reason was, where we are at now and where we want to go, seeking ever and ever again a confirmation of why we entered that dance in the first place.
