Pecha Kuching away in Grenoble (November 2014)
DANCE is a piece that I created in 2013 for the company Conny Janssen Danst in Rotterdam, co produced by Dansateliers. And the piece was chosen to go on tour with the company through the Netherlands! I was very happy about it. It’s a piece that marks the beginning of a certain identity through my work and I am very proud of it!
Throughout the spring I took part in Distinguished Dreams, a co production betweeen Nederlandse Dansdagen and Fashion Clash hat paired up choreographers with Fashion designers to create short works for young performers...I create Applause where the performers were constantly looking at their mobile phones from which the music was playing, we as viewer were wandering whether they were performing for their social networks or being inspired by popular icones… as the piece went their clothes were transforming into a more performative outfit…
I then went on to create SPACE which, was the pre study of what became later a piece for theater called SENSES. Here it was explored through space, questioning what different surroundings do to our senses. The research was meant to become o piece that was to be shown in an architecture festival, ZigZag City Festival, which takes place every two years in Rotterdam.
The process was a bit short and stressful as I didn’t manage to gather all the performers at all times and it definitely does not suit my way of working neither the nature of the work..
As part of Communicating Dance we had to chose a personal mobility, I decided to go to Grenoble/Le Pacifique… My intention was to learn more about the french dance field in general since I am willing to show and share my work in my home country (which is France)
Le Pacifique is a lovely Dance Center for Choreographic development… and the building is gorgeous, very inspiring to create!
One of the highlights of my stay there was the visit of La Rampe, a theater in Echirolles, close by Grenoble, because of its director Jacky Rocher who is very passionate man.
Here is a glimpse of his desk and what he daily receives in terms of flyers, brochures, sollicitations… not to mention emails and phones calls!
I got A LOT of information and A LOT of flyers to look through… both exciting and scary.. haha
Here is the Hunting Lodge a collective of 8 choreographers I am part of. We met in 2012 in Chroreoroam Europe, and decided to keep actively meeting as we bonded extremely well! Since then we meet once a year, to discuss practices and exchange insights… we do not create together.
I started a small garden on my balcony…
I finally took time to spend with my friends… That is SO important!
As well as with the family. The summer, as well as christmas, is a "recharging the batteries" time, touching ground with them!
I developed a solo called #loïcperela which explored our behaviors online, specifically connected to social networks and the use of selfies. Later on (in 2015) I decided not to continue anymore performing this work as I realised socio-cultural matters were not what I am interested to talk about in my work...
Part of the process was in Grenoble Le Pacifique… where I could benefit from the amazing black studio/theater they have!
The team made this stay and process very easy and fun! Hope to be back there at some point!
I curated an event in Rotterdamse Schouwburg as part of Moving Futures (a touring program in The Netherlands, for young makers, initiated by Dansateliers Rotterdam, Dansmakers Amsterdam, Random Collision Groningen, Dans Brabant Tilburg and Generale Oost Arnhem), linked to my solo #loïcperela where I wanted to point out our behaviors on social medias, I paired up with visual artist Charlotte Brand who painted a lot of selfies of mine… to get openly and obviously egocentric and questioning whether that was, fun or disturbing..
We took on SENSES as the first time after SPACE, with a partly fresh new cast, new starts, new ideas… and this time we explored with plants… which was fun but slightly abstract for outside viewers..
We went on to research in Bassano, left the plants in Rotterdam to never pick them up again (although one day, I will!! Haha) and went all crazy in Garage Nardini!
